The Bras D’Or Preservation Nature Trust has conserved land and habitat around the Bras d’Or Lake of Cape Breton since 1994. It is the oldest and the first nature trust formed in Nova Scotia. (1994)
We hold 1400 acres of land and five kilometers of shoreline surrounding the Lake as conservation easements and fee simple lands for preservation of the natural habitat.
We are currently focusing our efforts on the preservation of a unique and pristine harbour of several hundred acres that is surrounded by two conservation easements that we hold, a historic lighthouse maintained by a public trust and a very large Province of Nova Scotia Provincial Park. This is a unique recreational boaters area that has served local and international visitors for over 100 years. The Cruising Club of America was envisaged in this harbour in 1924.
There is one privately held portion of shorefront, five acres, that is for sale and we wish to purchase this and to then donate it to the Province of Nova Scotia for inclusion in the adjacent Provincial Park with the formal designation of a Provincial Marine Recreational Area in perpetuity. We hope to realize this goal by January of 2023.
